Acupuncture - what is it?

Acupuncture, developed over two thousand years, forms part of what is known as 'traditional medicine' in China, Japan and other Eastern countries.

The earliest records of Acupuncture date back over two thousand years and today there are over three million practitioners worldwide.

The earliest written record of acupuncture is the Chinese text Shiji (史記, English: Records of the Grand Historian) with elaboration of its history in the second century BCE medical text Huangdi Neijing (黃帝內經, English: Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon).[1]

Different variations of acupuncture are practiced and taught throughout the world.

The practice of Acupuncture is thought to have begun with the discovery that the stimulation of specific areas on the skin appears to affect the functioning of certain organs of the body.

How does it work?

Acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points on the body depending on the diagnosis. The points follow specific paths along the body and are believed to have therapeutic effects.

In Western terms, it is thought that it works by stimulating the nervous system in such a way that the body's natural chemicals, such as endorphins, are released into the body. Endorphins resemble the opiate class of chemicals in their ability to poduce analgesia and a feeling of well-being.

What to expect

During your appointment the acupuncturist will enquire about your general health, your symptoms, your diet, quality of your bowel movements and sleep patterns.

The acupuncturist may check your pulse and also press gently on various acupuncture points around the body to check for tenderness and pain.

The sterile needles your acupuncturist uses are not like syringe needles. They are much thinner and can range in width and length dependent on where they are to be inserted in the body.

The needles will be inserted by hand (sometimes through a guide tube) in various parts of the body such as the wrists, hands, feet, abdomen and back.

You may feel a mild sensation when the needles are inserted but it should not be painful. Many patients find the sensation extremely relaxing.

As with all complementary therapies, we recommend you seek the advice of your GP or regular medical practitioner before committing yourself to significant treatments, especially those that are physically invasive.

I began my studies in Oriental Medicine in 1993 at the London College of Oriental Massage. I went on to train in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Academy of Oriental Medicine in Austin, Texas and at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, Berks, where I graduated in acupuncture in 2003. I have been practising acupuncture in London for five years, in Greenwich and Borough.

More recently I have qualified in Chinese Herbal Medicine, which is a wonderful adjunct to acupuncture.
I supervise students undergoing clinical training in acupuncture. I am particularly interested in the clinical application of the Chinese medical classical texts, which provide the fundamental orientation of Chinese medicine practice.

I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council, bound to abide by its code of ethics and fully insured.

Clinically, I am interested in large range of conditions, including: Allergies and Hay Fever, Arthritis and Pain, Digestive and Bowel Disorders, Fertility issues, Headaches, Insomnia and Stress. Respiratory Disorders, Skin Disorders, Tiredness and Chronic Fatigue, Urogenital Issues.

Andrew Ogleby MBAcc
I am a fully qualified and experienced acupuncturist and graduated from the School of Five Element Acupuncture. I also studied at the London College of Traditional Acupuncture, the UK's leading school of Chinese medicine.

I receive continuous professional development, including post-graduate excellence training, and was one of the practitioners taking part in the King's Funded ‘CACTUS’ study (Classical Acupuncture for Treating Unexplained Symptoms) comprised of GP surgeries, researchers, statisticians, fellow acupuncturists and patients throughout London.

The CACTUS project ensures that the acupuncture treatment given to study patients is clinically relevant and that the scientific standard of the research conducted is high.

I am a keen martial artist, practicing both 'hard' and 'soft' styles. As a result, I am also interested in helping both sportmen and others to discover which forms of complementary exercise or other lifestyle changes might be most beneficial for them.
