| Homeopathy - what is it? | | | | | | | Homeopathy
is based on giving the client
highly diluted substances (which homeopaths call 'remedies') that are
given in mainly tablet form.
Some remedies are available over the counter
and a pharmacist can advise you on specific ones for your condition.
Remedies are also available over the internet but these may not be
tailored to your needs.
What does it involve?
Your first session with a homeopath will involve answering
questions about your general health, any conditions you're suffering
with and past history.
The homeopath may ask about your emotional
state, lifestyle and family medical history.
The homeopath may also ask about any sensations, feelings and sleep
patterns. Your therapy will take a
holistic approach (meaning the whole body) so keep an open-mind and
answer honestly.
These factors help the homeopath make a homeopathic diagnosis and
reach a decision
about what remedies might best suit your condition and how they should
be taken.
Your homeopath may, for example, advise you to take the remedy half an hour
after eating and to avoid strong foods or drinks believed to have an
effect on the remedy. | |

Is it
right for you?
Homeopathy
has been widely used throughout the world for more than 200 years. In
2000, the House of Lords’ Select Committee on Science & Technology
cited homeopathy as one of the five Group One therapies, having “an
individual diagnostic approach” along with osteopathy, chiropractic,
herbal medicine and acupuncture.(1)
Homeopathy will not interfere with the
action of medicines prescribed by your doctor. Because homeopathic
remedies are non-toxic, there are no side effects(2) and they are safe
even for pregnant women and babies.
Homeopathy is not an alternative to treatment by your GP who should always be informed about any medical condition from which you are suffering. Anyone taking prescribed drugs should first discuss
with their GP about seeking homeopathic therapy and also inform their homeopath about their GP's diagnosis and prescriptions
during their first appointment. |
