Reiki - what is it?

Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui that uses a technique commonly called palm healing as a form of complementary and alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine by some professional bodies.[1]

Today many branches of Reiki exist, though there exists two major traditions, respectively called Traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki.

Japanese Reiki hand positions presented in the Usui Reiki Ryōhō Hikkei (the Usui Reiki Handbook) as used and compiled by Usui are considerably more extensive than the hand positions used in Western Reiki.[2]

The practitioner's hands are gently placed in various positions over the body, often inducing a sense of relaxation and wellbeing as the body's energies are 'rebalanced'.

It is believed that Reiki can enhance everyday life, and regular sessions may help to ward-off illness and fatigue.

What can I expect?

The recipient simply lies on a couch and relaxes. If you are unable to lie down the treatment can be given in a sitting position, the main thing is that you as comfortable as possible. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki 'energy' will pass through anything - even plaster casts.

The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body.

A full treatment usually takes 1 to 1½ hours with each position held for several minutes.
