Sports Massage - what is it?

Sports Massage is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, ligaments and tendons.

The techniques used by sports massage practitioners have been developed to ensure effective and efficient results are gained from each massage given.

If you are a sports performer, at any level, a sports specific massage can be beneficial at various stages of participation.

For example:
  • Conditioning / training phase
  • Pre competition
  • Inter competition
  • Post competition
  • Post travel
  • Injury prevention
  • Injury recovery
The main benefit of sports massage is that it improves muscle flexibility, blood circulation and reduces swelling, aids the prevention of sports injuries and assists the body with recovery and repair after sports injuries have been sustained.

The reported benefits of Sports Massage include:
  • Improved circulation & lymphatic flow
  • Assists in the removal of metabolic waste
  • Sedates or stimulate nerve endings
  • Increases or decreases muscle tone
  • Increases or decreases muscle length
  • Remodels scar tissue when required
  • Assists in mental preparation for sporting participation
Please note:

A Sports massage should be avoided if you have open wounds, muscle tears, sprained ligaments or burns; varicose veins, phlebitis, thrombosis, cancer tumours, melanoma or haemophilia.

People with diabetes should be aware that a sports massage will have the same effect as exercise.

As with all complementary therapies, we recommend you seek the advice of your GP or regular medical practitioner before committing yourself to significant treatments, especially those that are physically invasive.
